Americans Favor Rights for Gays, Lesbians to Inherit, Adopt (Gallup)

“While 53% of Americans support legalizing same-sex marriage, significantly higher percentages support the idea of equal rights for partners or spouses of gays or lesbians when it comes to inheritance rights and employee benefits, and making it legal for gays and lesbians to adopt children. Support for all three issues is up at least slightly from three years ago.”

Whatever else it is, homosexuality is not a contagious disease like measles. Prevailing scientific opinion is that an individual’s sexuality is determined at a very early age and that a child’s teachers do not really influence this.

Justice Lewis Powell of the United States Supreme Court was perhaps one of the most famous public figures to come around on gay rights. He voted in 1986 to uphold a criminal sodomy law, telling his law clerk at the time, “I don’t believe I’ve ever met a homosexual.” The clerk, who was gay, replied, “Certainly you have, but you just don’t know that they are.”

Justice Powell later said that he regretted his vote.

No I don’t, I don’t [support gay marriage]. I think traditional marriage is what should be sanctioned—and not at the expense of discriminating in other forms of family structure—so I don’t support it, but I would say that wholesome, loving family life ought to be kind of the organizing principle in a free society… I don’t think that people need to be discriminated against because they don’t share my belief on this and if people love their children with all their heart and soul and that’s what they do and that’s how they organize their life that should be held up as examples for others to follow, because we need it. We desperately need it. And that can take all sorts of forms—it doesn’t have to take the one that I think should be sanctioned under the law.

A few weeks ago, subsequent to oral argument in this case, the President of the United States ignited a media firestorm by announcing that he supports same sex marriage as a policy matter,” O’Scannlian wrote. “Drawing less attention, however, were his comments that the Constitution left this matter to the States and that ‘one of the things that [he]’d like to see is-that [the] conversation continue in a respectful way.’

I want everyone treated fairly in this country. We have never gone wrong when we’ve extended rights and responsibilities to everybody. That doesn’t weaken families; that strengthens families.
