“ It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress. ”
“His distaste for government is so deep you wonder how he can bear to work there. He’s like a vegan who has chosen to sup at a steakhouse, though I guess that’s the point. Now that he has access to the kitchen, he can filibuster the filet, stall the sirloin with nuisance amendments, and leave diners with only a side of spinach, and maybe an iceberg wedge.
It’s a crazy salad he’s serving, no matter how it’s currently dressed.

“In his youth, Mr. Frank said, he realized he was drawn personally to men and professionally to government. He assumed the former would impede the latter.
“At this point,” he concluded, “I think my continued sexual attraction to men is more politically acceptable than my attraction to government.”

“WASHINGTON — A decade after the night that American bombs first rained down on Baghdad, the president joked about wearing a green tie for a belated St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Congress noisily focused on whether spending cuts would force the cancellation of the White House Easter egg roll. Cable news debated whether a show about young women has too much sex in it.
But on one topic, there was a conspiracy of silence: Republicans and Democrats agreed that they did not really want to talk about the Iraq war.”
“ The relationship of the citizenry to the government changes dramatically when it knows that they have a government that no longer adheres to [the rule of law]. Because I think in an ideal free society the way things work is that people who wield power have a healthy fear of the people over whom they wield power: they fear the consequences of what will happen if they abuse their power. But in a tyrannical state, by definition, that gets reversed and the citizenry fears the government because they know there’s nothing constraining it from doing whatever it wants, that these lines that we’ve imposed are simply being disregarded without consequence. ”

“ An endless succession of ‘new’ Nixons kept turning out to be the same Nixon as before. And it occurred to me that we never had to have a ‘new’ Lincoln or a ‘new’ Roosevelt or a ‘new’ anyone worthwhile in high public office.’ ”

“ What I used to say to people, when I was much more engagé myself, is that you can’t be apolitical. It will come and get you. It’s not that you shouldn’t be neutral. It’s that you won’t be able to stay neutral. ”

“ Members of political majorities succumb easily to smugness and complacency, to the conviction that explaining and justifying ideas is no longer necessary, to the temptation to dismiss critics as so many irrelevant cranks. “Groupthink” is mainly a disease of the powerful and complacent, not the fractious opposition. ”

“ It’s precisely when a party achieves power that its members need to start worrying the most about idiocy and greed. When you’re in the opposition, you’re already down and out, so what difference does it make if your side’s idiocy leaves you — temporarily — a little bit more down and out? And being in the opposition offers fewer patronage opportunities. ”
