A new Congressional Budget Office report finds that the 2009 Recovery Act is continuing to save jobs and protect the economy from what would have been a much deeper recession. (off the charts)

Obama didn’t remake Washington. But his first two years stand as one of the most successful legislative periods in modern history. Among other achievements, he has saved the economy from depression, passed universal health care, and reformed Wall Street. Along the way, Obama may have changed his mind about his 2008 critique of Hillary Clinton. “Working the system, not changing it” and being “consumed with beating” Republicans “rather than unifying the country and building consensus to get things done” do not seem like such bad strategies for success after all.

Oddly, I am okay with this.

The Obama-ites also think they get unfair raps. The public believes that the 2009 Obama stimulus plan was an abject failure, even though, according to almost every detached analysis, it created or saved millions of jobs.

Many voters also believe the Obama health-care proposal amounts to a massive government takeover. In fact, the administration rejected the notion of a public option for the non-elderly.

Although no GOP contender acknowledged this fact in their debate Wednesday night — about 40 percent of Obama’s $825 billion stimulus, which Republicans habitually denounce, came in the form of tax cuts. They do not give him credit for being the tax cutter he has been.
